Goal
The main goal of this project is to find out how many different families there are that used the name Van der Heide. This includes both extant and extinct families. The emphasis here is on the surname "van der Heide", this may include spelling variations but only if they are part of a larger group with the main surname. Think for example of an early ancestor who used "van der Heij" before surname spelling was regulated in the early 19th century. Another example could be a brother that used the name "van der Heijde" where his siblings used "van der Heide".
Project page
This page acts as a central collaborative platform to collect information on the der Heide Van der Heide name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Van der Heide name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Van der Heide's), by time period (18th Century Van der Heide's), or by topic (Van der Heide DNA, Van der Heide Occupations, Van der Heide Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

The name
The name Van der Heide means that the family came from a place where there were heathlands.
The name is the most common in the nothern part of the Netherlands and also in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In 1947 there were just over 4600 people with the name and in 2007 there were over 7200.[1]
